I hardly drive to and from work anymore. But last night I happened to park on the street, right next to Baby’s.

This morning I saw from far away a purple little slip on my wiper…”Shit, ticket?”

Then, I smiled. Big big smile, just like the one drawn on the Post-It….

Robin’s Egg Box

Those are Robin’s eggs. That out-of-this-world soft powdered baby blue color, reminds me of…..Tiffany’s!

I’ve loved Tiffany’s ever since my mom bought a Paloma Picasso’s gold heart necklace (for herself) back in the early 90s when we first arrived in the US. Just adore it! By 2000 after I started working full time, I made my first purchase of a very classic T&CO sterling silver ring for myself. Ever since, I’ve looked for excuses to go in the stores and make yearly purchases for either myself or others. Never spending too much there at once, but always walk out happy with something sparkling on me.

But I’ve never received anything from anyone in that robin’s egg-colored box….

Baby knows I have been eye-ing the new Paloma Picasso Crowned Heart necklace for quite some time. Last time we visited, they told us it’s brand new with limited number available and was all sold out at that point.  “….on July 21st we will get 200 new ones all over the nation…” 200 for the entire US?! 4 per state?! I loved it, but not enough to visit Tiffany & Co. first thing Monday in my sickly body!

So when I got the promotional email on Monday morning, I simply filed it in trash and figured if it was meant to be, I’ll get it eventually.

By 11pm, I totally forgotten about it amidst all the commotion of Baby coming home! Since he started to drink water from the faucet like a doggy, so I asked if he’d rather that I got him a glass of water. Normally he would refuse but he seemed quite thirsty last night. So he agreed.

When I climbed into bed after getting the glass, half talking to Baby, who was brushing his teeth, I felt something in my bed.

A little robin’s egg box!!!!

Of course, Mr Master-Plan-Accomplished didn’t even move a pinky amongst my woo’s and ahh’s of trying to unwrap the present.

And he got it! The limited numbered Picasso Crowned Heart necklace!!!

It wasn’t my birthday. Nor Valentine’s Day. Nor did I do anything other than being very sick to deserve such a pretty necklace. But I was so sincerely touched.

My Baby gave me my very first robin’s egg present!!

PS. Afterwards I honestly (and stupidly) admitted that I love the Smarties just as much as I love the necklace…Well, hopefully that doesn’t mean I’m getting chocolates only from now on! ;)

PPS. 7/24/08 — I am so ashamed! This is actually not the first Tiffany present I’ve gotten ever! Queen S just reminded me that I gave my “first time” to her! Tsk tsk….I must say, I am still wearing the present from her till this day. :)

My home-made Kindle Cover

I have been an electronic junkie…that’s no news. But It isn’t until now, several months after the purchase of my Amazon Kindle, have I so appreciate its full value.

On the way to ER on Sunday afternoon one week ago, I hadn’t remember to bring my newly purchased iPod with me, but I brought my Kindle. Thinking the ER wait may be long and I could catch up on the accidental subscription of The Wall Street Journal I had on my Kindle. (Accidental because I already have access to WSJ.)

I was never a big fan of newspapers. Not because the dislike of worldly news, but the hate for printing press newspaper smell and the finger-blackening ink. Needless to say, Kindle was my newspaper-reading savior.

It was interesting that I left the iPod but brought the Kindle. But to think about it logically, my rushed decision wasn’t without reasons.

  1. Kindle has all my digital subscription, plus immediate online bookshop with more than enough books I can finish during the 4-day stay in the hospital.
  2. Kindle stores my beloved Peapea’s photo, granted only in Sketch n’ Etch format.
  3. Kindle stores and plays audio books I’ve purchased.
  4. Kindle stores and plays music files.
  5. Kindle allows web-browsing.

In the couple days after hospital discharge and voluntary house-arrest, I even find greater value of my Kindle. With limited ability to shift myself much while on the couch or in bed, I can read through pages after pages and change from books to newspapers to magazines all using two fingers of my right hand! Ah…heaven!!

With all the great things about this piece of device, I must say the one thing that annoys me tremendously is the over-sized paging buttons!! If only I can find a way to disable some of them! (Yes, unfortunately there are more than one set!)

In addition, with my new found love, my neighborhood library, I couldn’t stop but wonder if the society of the DRM-protected content can find a way to have such a thing as “library edition” books, where patrons of the library can download books from the library, and after restricted period of time, delete the download from the Kindle. That way, it allows and promotes the utilization of Kindle in the library communities. I’m sure if that’s the case, people will be even more willing to shell out the initial set of investment of a Kindle just so to access the free library “books”.

Just wondering…..

Summer Solstice

Friday was not only the longest day of the year, it could’ve also been the hottest day of this summer.

After working from home for a painfully long 9 hours, we decided to head down to the Target in Daly City to buy me a bike.

“Pathetic Friday activity! We’re like an old married couple!” I IM’ed Babes.
“BUT, not if we are having fun together!” We both typed at the same time.
“*Jinx!!!*” Both typed again.

Yes. Two years ago I would’ve thought myself totally pathetic. However tired I used to feel from the long week, I always wanted to go out to fancy restaurants, or bars, or dancing. But now, I am content with a boring trip to Target!!

But it WAS fun.

Babes and I ended up taking a nice little detour to the ever-cooling Pacifica beach. We took a nice walk on the beach, and made a few splashes in the Pacific Ocean under the setting sun. And of course, couple hours later we left Target, with everything but the bike.

While lining up for two Double-Doubles Animal Style at In-and-Out, I couldn’t help but to say again that we were like an old married couple. “But we’re a child-less and happy old married couple!!” Babes said.

Yes indeed. Child-less. And definitely very, very happy.

Hearts on Fire…Hearts on Hiatus

“When I was one-and-twenty…”
by A. E. Housman (1859-1936)

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
‘Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.’
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
‘The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
‘Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.’
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.

————————————–

For as long as I could remember, this has been one of my favorite poem. Such a universally understood concept, yet repeatedly tested and proven. Even yesterday in SATC, the characters mentioned a smart girl only turns not so smart when she falls in love; when she loses her heart….

And for the longest time, friends have always told me that my coolness in mind is a defense mechanism. But my heart on hiatus has proven to keep my fancy free.

But the most logical heart can be set on fire…

And yet the most passionate heart can also go on hiatus, with a quick switch of mind…

Now I am one-and-thirty, is there any use to talk to me?

Desperately in Love

Sometimes, even the toughest of people, can be craving for love.

Maybe because of loneliness, maybe because of boredom. Nonetheless, we are desperately wanting to be in love.

So we went for anything that moves, anything that was capable in giving us a look, a hug, or a kiss. But that wasn’t enough…and that was definitely not love; maybe lust.

Then we tried to grab onto anything that our souls desired; someone who laughed at the same joke, someone who loved the same music, someone who read the same book. And even so, it still wasn’t enough….that was just a really good friend.

And then we find it. The perfect combination of it all, and they like us too!

But there are so many hurdles still, so much baggage each of us still carries. Will we be a good fit? Only time can tell. Until then, we’re just so desperately in love…desperately wanting to be in love.

Variation of Poutine

Dipping Fries in Wendy\'s Frosty

All my Canadian friends (more specifically the French Canadians) have been telling me about this “disgusting” dish named Poutine. It’s more or less French fries with cheese curds on it. Of course, like any other food, as time goes by, different variations of poutine got created. With gravy, dressings, foie gras……you name it.

Has anyone ever consider dipping Wendy’s French fries in Frosty as a variation of Poutine? Does it sound gross? Don’t judge until you tried!

Introduction

In a parallel universe, I would have hoped many things to worked out differently.

But in this world by the bay, we’ll just have to live life the way it’s been played out so far…Happily.

So here’s my effort to record down the tales of this world, SLの世界。
